The ability to work remotely and travel the world simultaneously has become a dream for many individuals and the digital nomad lifestyle has seen a significant increase in the last few years, especially after the pandemic.
Having the freedom to work full-time and not only travel necessarily, but to have a flexible schedule that allows time to indulge in what and who we love has had many rethink their dreams and goals.
However, just like any other lifestyle, it comes with its own set of pros and cons, as I’ve come to really discover in the near two years I myself have been living this way. Check it out!
Pros of Digital Nomad Lifestyle:
Flexibility: digital nomads have the freedom to work from anywhere in the world. They can set their own hours and work at their own pace. This flexibility allows them to have a better work-life balance and gives them the opportunity to explore new places.
Cost-effective: travelling as a digital nomad can be more cost-effective than traditional travel. Since digital nomads are able to work from anywhere, they can choose to live in affordable destinations and avoid the high costs associated with traditional travel.
Personal growth: travelling as a digital nomad can help individuals to grow personally and professionally. They have the opportunity to immerse themselves in different cultures, learn new languages, and develop new skills.
Cons of Digital Nomad Lifestyle:
Lack of stability: the digital nomad lifestyle can be unpredictable, which can be stressful for some individuals. There is no guarantee of steady income or consistent work, which can make it difficult to plan for the future.
Loneliness: travelling alone as a digital nomad can be lonely, especially for individuals who enjoy socialising and building long-term relationships.
Work-life balance: While the flexibility of the digital nomad lifestyle is a pro, it can also be a con. Since digital nomads are constantly connected, it can be difficult to set boundaries between work and personal time.
Things to consider before becoming a digital nomad
Become a digital nomad is an exciting and life-altering decision that offers incredible opportunities for personal and professional growth. However, it's not a step to be taken lightly, and there are several key considerations to keep in mind.
Like assessing your financial stability and creating a sustainable income stream or streams. Freelancing, remote work, or an online business can provide the necessary funds to support your travels while allowing flexibility in your schedule.
Secondly, research your destinations thoroughly from visa requirements to cost of living and internet connectivity. Each location has its unique factors that can significantly impact your experience as a digital nomad.
While the digital nomad lifestyle offers the freedom to explore the world, it’s important to maintain a work-life balance. It's easy to blur the lines between work and leisure, especially when working across different time zones, so setting clear boundaries and sticking to a routine can help you to maintain productivity and prevent burnout.
Lastly, building a supportive network is crucial. Connecting with fellow digital nomads, locals and online communities to share experiences, tips, and advice. Having some form of community can provide a sense of belonging in an otherwise transient lifestyle.
SOME USEFUL THINGS TO INVEST IN AS A DIGITAL NOMAD
As a digital nomad, it’s important to invest in things that can make things that make your journey more productive, comfortable and enjoyable. These are some of the things that are at the top of my list:
1. Quality Technology: investing in reliable and portable devices like a high-performance laptop, smartphone, noise-cancelling headphones, and a portable charger. These tools are the backbone of your remote work setup.
2. Nomad Insurance: having comprehensive nomad insurance, like SafetyWing, that goes a little further for the full-time traveller across 180 different countries is essential for peace of mind and financial security in case of unexpected events. It’s important to note that insurance is also required in order to enter in to certain countries, so you don’t want to get stuck!
3. Secure Internet Connection: invest in reliable mobile data plans that can serve as a back up hotspot and a virtual private network (VPN) for secure browsing, especially when connecting to public Wi-Fi networks.
4. Travel Gear: investing in durable, lightweight luggage and versatile clothing suitable for different climates is a game changer. Quality gear will make your journey and day-to-day life set up more comfortable and efficient - which also goes for any accessories necessary for your work routine.
5. Language Courses and Cultural Experiences: investing in language courses or cultural immersion experiences can greatly enrich your travels and help you connect with local communities. The experiences and adventures that make your nomadic lifestyle memorable, from local cuisine to excursions and cultural events.
7. Financial Tools: consider opening international bank accounts, using online payment platforms and/or a travel-friendly card with low foreign transaction fees to avoid unnecessary charges.
8. Health and Fitness: Prioritize your well-being with gym memberships, fitness apps, and healthy eating options. Staying active and eating well is crucial for long-term nomadic success.
9. Professional Development and Networking: if you’re thinking about working while travelling, you may want to put aside funds for online courses, workshops, or certifications to enhance your skills and marketability in the digital job market. Researching industry events, conferences and digital nomad meet-ups to build valuable connections, both personally and professionally, are also super worth it!
10. Emergency Fund: keep a financial cushion for unexpected expenses or emergencies, ensuring you can navigate challenges without derailing your journey.
Personal investments vary from one individual to another, depending on personal priorities and career goals, so these are more like suggestions from my own personal experience. Take some time to tailor your investments to align with your unique nomadic journey!
Becoming a digital nomad is a transformative journey that requires careful planning, adaptability and a willingness to embrace the unknown. By considering these various aspects, you'll be better equipped to embark on your new adventure with confidence and enthusiasm.
