Nomad Insurance and the Rise of Digital Nomad Families

“As digital nomads living in different locations, aren’t you worried about what this could mean for you when you want to have a family?”
While I didn’t really appreciate the assumption that I want children, my answer to this interview question was simple. I’m certain digital nomad families are not a new concept, since the pandemic, there has been a significant increase in the number of parents that are now taking their families remote. Whether so they themselves can travel more, give them a better quality of life (that costs less) and education or for other reasons. The last two years specifically have given people the opportunity to reflect and rethink they way they shape their lives.
And with it are now more structures in different countries for this than ever before. Chatting to Rowena Hennigan, from RoRemote, on The Remote Life Podcast, she mentioned that parents can seek help from support groups online. These include parents educators in different locations, building a community. Plus there are more and more schooling systems in place nowadays that mean children can continue their education wherever they go.
Lona Alia, Head of Revenue at SafetyWing, also talked about the benefits of being remote as a family on The Remote Life Podcast. Namely the freedom to build her own routine as a mum and the world experience her children get on a day to day basis. Personally I’m jealous of all those travel adventures and being immersed in so many languages from such a young age!
One of the many amazing things about women like Rowena and Lona is they are constantly creating access to the remote lifestyle with families, through research and products. I imagine there is a lot to think about both day to day as well as with planning to make sure your family stay comfortable and safe.
Luckily, one of the things that families (and individuals) can count on though nowadays is travel and health insurance, no matter where they go. Which is where a company like SafetyWing comes in handy to cover remote individuals and families wherever they happen to be in the world (with some exceptions).
Along with requiring cover in order to enter certain countries, if you actually read the fine print of some policies, you are only covered if you buy your insurance before you book (yes, book not board) your flight or method of transportation.
Which is why I am excited to be partnering up with SafetyWing as an ambassador because insurance shouldn’t actually be last on the packing list! They are actively working to create equal cover, no matter your passport.
It’s a little too easy to believe nothing will happen. However considering the two times I happened to need it (when I missed a flight that wasn’t my fault and my phone being stolen), I wasn’t covered. I now believe more than ever that it’s worth it for the peace of mind. Just like your car insurance, it’s not about necessarily covering you against you, but other people and circumstances that are out of your control.
So have a think and get started with me here - I get a little commission if you use my link - and be covered for your next remote life chapter.
Would you go remote with your family (current or future)?
