The rise of the portfolio career.

According to the Cambridge dictionary, a portfolio career is defined as: "the fact of having several part-time jobs at once, rather than one full-time job". But let me just offer a little spin on that one.

In the UK, most have been brought up to believe that they will have one job and one job only for the rest of their lives. Then things happened and suddenly millennials won't ever get on the property ladder or retire or have job security, like ever.

But what if I told you there was a way to have your smashed avocado and eat it too?

Remember, the job of the media is to find a story. Whether positive or not. It's not personal. It's just a job someone does. 

Some days we wake up and we're the most privileged generation, others we wake up and the headlines will tell us we're doomed no matter how hard we try. Take it from a PR: it's not personal, it's just what is selling at the time. 

So now I've busted the journalists (soz!), let's get back to it: what is a portfolio career and why is this term relevant for you?

Don't get me wrong, if you are someone who is happy working the one job or a 9-5pm Monday-Friday, then awesome! Good for you - but this post isn't for you.

If, however, you are someone who wants to make a few (million) extra without playing 'the waiting game' in your current job, or working yourself to the bone, then keep reading.

1. A portfolio career is deciding how you work - and being prepared to work a little longer at first. Do you prefer working in an office? At home? Or both? Or like me, pretty much anywhere as long as it's not dead silent. The beach is definitely high up on the list for me. It is designing how you work, when you work and what you do to work.

2. A portfolio career is creating passive income and making money work for you. Whether videos seminars, books, products or even investments, a portfolio career is about making money work for you alongside you working for it. Whether its to create money for your big trip, a house or your pension. There's no need to sweat or take tiny portions out of your current pay cheque when you can have a fund building up alongside you.

3. A portfolio career is a why. Because an individual wouldn't go out of their way to break up a perfectly-working routine that society hands to us after school. Wanting a portfolio career is wanting something different from the default given to us after we finish school. Whether it is to optimise our time on this earth or for a bigger cause - even for wanting more money, a portfolio career is a way of being.

A couple of years ago, there was less literature on designing your life. But as many people begin to want a little more control in the driver seat of their lives, more is appearing on shelves and in Amazon. Now more than ever, we are looking for ways to manage our lifestyles, creating our portfolio careers.
